THE VIEW FROM BEHIND THE LENS 008

JULIAN LOUIE: PART TWO

THE PRESENTATION: SEVERITY
AND A BIZARRE DAY

... Today is really a weird day. first, the day started with our server shut down unexpectedly, leaving all our online contents blank for a good one hour! Then, the bizarre day continued by me receiving an email early afternoon that asked me to present my works at 6pm today. I had every urge to turn it down because it was a standard procedure to schedule appointment days in advance if not weeks so I could do some researches and tailor my works accordingly. But, standing firmly on the principle of never turning down a potential work or project, I went ahead ... well, let us just say that my intuition should had vetoed the principle! Finally, after dragging myself back to the office and getting ready to set up a conversation with one of my clients, whom I was preparing some sketches for, I was given another surprise (unfortunately not pleasant neither) that T-mobile was also having a black out in its network, therefore, no dialing in nor out!!! An email sending out to ask for a Skype conference has not been returned made my pretty much at the very moment of loosing my cool!!! Therefore, I am writing this post in hope that everything shall return its normality soon and there will be no more additional surprises for the day, haha!!!

... Now, I am going to cheer myself up by continuing with the second part of Julian Louie Post, The Presentation. I really have to say that working on those photos had been a pure joy for me as well as a very emotional journey to undertake! Not only was I able to indulge myself alone in front of the computer with all the details and intricate attentions paid on this tightly edited 20-pieces collection, but also to unleash my own self while interpreting the photos and making my own sense out of them! For the 2nd part, I took out the romantic and ethereal softness, which you sensed so strongly from the backstage photos in Part One, and heightened the sense of severity by emphasizing the contrasts between the mixture of black, red, white and the neutral while maintaining an evenly casted sheer overtone of bronze. The composition of each page was evolved around the playing with space between the movement (walking) and the still (posing) as well as the foreground (close up image) and the background (small full figure image).

... In a final note: my main objective for this two part series of Julian Louie, aside from the obvious one of sharing the collection in an intimate view with you, is to show how the process of editing, or post production, can preserve, emphasize, diminish, alter, replace or, in some case, change the tone of a collection. The most exciting feeling came from the unique connection I felt with the image (in this sense, I am referring to each photo image as a whole, not only the design) and how such visual stimulus evoked emotions that took me on this journey of endless slashing, chopping, manipulating and constant debating before finally re-collecting each image and composing them in a way that communicated what I saw and how I felt. In the case of Julian Louie's Spring 2010 collection, it is about both the romantic softness (Part One) and the uncompromising severity (Part Two)! ....

You and me both. I had a really difficult day with a client that left me feeling at a loss.

This entry was fantastic. I love that you say this "...but also to unleash my own self while interpreting the photos and making my own sense out of them! "

It's so important to remember that it's not just the vision of the artist or designer but the journey that you take everyone else that experiences your work. It's interesting to think that while I have a very specific vision for my work I may be taking a viewer on a unique journey - with a unique interpretation that is just as valid as my original intent. In a way it's almost letting go of ownership of your design and handing it off to the viewer.

You definitely gave me something new to think about with this one.

I'm so sorry that you had such a bad day. I've been feeling so stressed out. Those suits are beautiful. I love the blush beige and the soft pinks. I've told my mother, I don't like white wedding dresses because I want one in champange/ soft pink. This just reminds of an ideal summer.

oh dear i hope the rest of the day turned out better.

this is really an interesting process, it reminds me of the work i did in college during the post-interview process: pooling data and interpreting it from our point of view.

i have to say, the light colours and romantic style are really refreshing.

Oh dear, I can empathize! Your communications issues sound like what we encounter here a lot! What a pain- makes the work virtually stop, doesn't it?

On a positive note- your work on the images from this gorgeous collection is beyond beautiful. I'm glad sharing the process here helped cheer you up a bit.

I'll skip the computer bit - it can be a pain, especially when you have deadlines and work to do, but as anything technical, anything can be fixed, thank God.

I could stare at these images forever... They are so calm, peaceful, powedery romantic and gorgeous... I am falling in love with the dress from the second photo... If only I could have it...

Have a wonderful day!

Sorry you had such a blah day. It seems when things go wrong, really everything goes wrong.

Thanks for sharing more pics and insight into the Julian Louie collection. I love the layout and the color contrasts in the image. I get to see a fair amount of post production in my line of work, but we don't work with runway collections - only photo shoots, so it's always interesting to catch a glimpse of the process behind it.

I really love your editing work with those images, it gives room to the garments and enhances them at the same time - and that is definitely not easily achieved.

The monochromatic palette really works for those intricate details of this collection (I love it, BTW, just wish I could "curate" one or more of those pieces to my wardrobe). And the subtle rhythms of walking and posing work beautifully, it reveals bit more of the nature of those garments. Excellent job!
